Just Maria and I tonight. We talked about our different ways of drafting. Maria: Character arcs first, plot later. Dianne: Plot first, character arcs later. Both styles can work, as long as the writer is willing adapt the original vision to what the story demands.

We talked about how hard it is to let a first draft stink (especially after coming straight from a more polished manuscript). We also discussed writing transitions that seem boring versus finding a more clever way to do them or just cutting to the next scene. Then we finished by talking about accountability -- including writing logs and stickers on calendars.

We talked learning to cut from a manuscript, learning to let of an old story, learning how many revisions are needed to create a final polished manuscript.

It is the first work week of the new year. In my world my kids' school is cancelled due to brutal cold. So things are starting not exactly as planned. But isn't that the plan? The new year is for meeting the unexpected with aplomb and still getting your good work done. Writing tonight with Dianne? Th-Th is an a small hiatus until we get our 2014 act together.
